Shrewsbury mourns the passing of retired Fire Captain John Dolan

Shrewsbury retired Fire Captain John Bernard Dolan Jr. died suddenly in Boston on Saturday, January 8, 2022, from complications of ampullary cancer. He was 72 years old.

Mr. Dolan was born in Worcester, Massachusetts on February 16, 1949, and grew up in Shrewsbury. He was the son of John B. Dolan Sr. and Pauline (Kelley) Dolan.

Mr. Dolan graduated from St. John’s High School and Boston College class of 1971. He was a member of the Shrewsbury Fire Department for 32 years, appointed as a call firefighter in 1971, a permanent firefighter in 1979, and retired as a Captain and Fire Prevention Officer in 2003. He was also the former president of the Shrewsbury Firefighters Association and a member of the Shrewsbury Fire & Police Association.

After retirement, Mr. Dolan moved to Fort Myers in Florida and spent the winter months there for many years.

Mr. Dolan is survived by a large family, including children, grandchildren, siblings, and he is deeply recognized by many friends from the Shrewsbury Fire Department.

“Captain Dolan was a great friend, leader and respected mentor to many members of the Shrewsbury Fire Department over the years. We pass along deepest condolences to his family and friends. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all of us at the Fire Department,” said the local fire agency in a statement.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, January 18, 2022, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home followed by a funeral Mass at 11:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, with the burial at Mountain View Cemetery.
