After hosting a vaccine clinic, staff finds a bullet at Shrewsbury Oak Middle School

The next day after school district leadership opened the Oak Middle School building for a COVID-19 vaccine clinic, the school staff found a “live bullet” that resulted in a local and state police search.

The school was opened for the COVID-19 vaccine clinic on December 2, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and the ammunition was found on December 3 in the morning.

“This morning members from the Shrewsbury Police Department responded to the Oak Middle School for a report of a single round of ammunition found in a hallway of the school,” the Shrewsbury Police department said on December 3 in a public statement released around 1:00 p.m.

Resources from the local police and the Massachusetts State police, including police dogs, were used to search the “entire building” and no “further concerning items or issues” were discovered according to the agency.

There is no public information available regarding the type of bullet or if the police agencies have any idea of who brought the ammunition to the school building.

“Upon confirming the report additional resources from our department and the Massachusetts State Police were deployed. Out of an abundance of caution a thorough search of the entire building was conducted which included a sweep with Massachusetts State Police K9’s. This cautionary search discovered no further concerning items or issues. Additional police personnel will be present at the school for a remainder (sic) of the day,” the Police explained.

Staff from the Worcester Department of Public Health, Umass Memorial, and the town government performed the vaccine clinic where “865 individuals” were vaccinated, according to the town government.

Oak Middle School Principal, Ann Jones, and the School District Superintendent, Joseph Sawyer, “reassured” families that they “responded to the discovery of the bullet by following safety protocols to ensure that the school environment was safe.”
