Fire Department evacuates ten homes due to a gas line leak in Shrewsbury

The Shrewsbury Fire Department safely handled a gas leak in the Town after a construction crew struck a line.

Approximately at 8:00 a.m. on August 30, 2021, the Fire agency responded to a call stating a construction crew had struck a gas line on Pinedale Road. The agency said that “many calls reporting odors as far away as Maple Avenue” were received.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a “high-pressure gas line had been severed, and a large volume of gas was being released,” according to an official statement from the agency.

The Fire Department stated that the power “was cut to the affected area to eliminate possible ignition sources” and ten homes were evacuated as a precaution.

“Eversource (energy company) arrived soon after and shut off gas to the area,” the Department said. After that, all homes were “ventilated and metered to ensure they were safe before occupants were allowed to return.”
