Town elections postponed until further notice in Shrewsbury

The annual Town Elections and the Town Meeting in Shrewsbury have been canceled due to the coronavirus COVID-19 health crisis.

Acting under newly granted authority by the Massachusetts Legislature and Governor, the five-member executive branch of the town government (Board of Selectmen) voted on the measures on April 7th, 2020.

The annual town election was initially scheduled to be held on May 5th, and the town meeting on May 18th. Both are postponed without a new date determined.

“The Board of Selectmen and Town Manager will continue to have conversations on a definitive date for the Annual Town Meeting and Annual Town Election according to the circumstances as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak and will make a decision in the best interest of the health and safety of the Town of Shrewsbury and its residents,” the official press release from the Board says.

All elected officials will remain in their current position until a new election.

On March 24th, 2020, the Shrewsbury Board of Selectmen declared a local state of emergency due to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. On April 3rd, 2020, the Governor of Massachusetts signed the “Act to address challenges faced by municipalities and state authorities resulting from COVID-19,” a bill that passed both chambers of the Legislature to support local governments.

The town government opened a COVID-19 information line for Shrewsbury Residents to use at 508-7991019. The line provides facts and information about COVID-19, how to stop the spread, what to do if someone is experiencing symptoms and quarantine information.
