Shrewsbury Fire Chief James Vuona announced the fire department is running an investigation with the Massachusetts Fire Marshal’s Office to determine the causes of a fire inside a commercial facility that uses hazardous materials in the Town of Shrewsbury.

On March 5th, 2020, around 3:30 AM, the town’s fire agency received a call reporting a fire at Supercon‘s acid room, a company located at 830 Boston Turnpike (Route 9).

The building’s fire alarm and sprinkler systems were active when the firefighters arrived, and light smoke was evident in the building’s loading dock area.

After metering the facility for dangerous gases and performing preventive procedures, the firefighters entered the building. They verified that the sprinkler system had extinguished the fire, and there was no leaking chemicals, no risk of contamination in the room.

The Massachusetts Hazmat Team was called to the scene and considered the building clear for operations at approximately 5:30 AM.

“This fire was quickly extinguished with help from the building’s sprinkler system,” Chief Vuona stated. “Thankfully, there was no resulting hazmat incident or chemical-related fire, and the situation was quickly resolved.”

Supercon, Inc. defines itself as a business specialized in “superconducting wire” production. According to the company, its Shrewsbury manufacturing facility was “specifically built” to produce composite metal wire products.
