Around 4:30 AM on Saturday, December 7th, 2019, the Shrewsbury Fire Department responded to a call reporting a car crashed into Jordan Pond with someone trapped inside, according to a public statement from the agency.
Firefighters from Engine 2 arrived at the scene. Jumped with cold water rescue suits to attempt to open a door and free the occupant but were unable “due to the vehicle’s positioning,” the department said. Shortly after, the car was finally pulled out of the water using the Rescue 1 truck’s winch.
The temperature at the time of the incident was 21 °F.
Ten minutes after their arrival, firefighters finally untrapped the victim through the driver’s door, and the Worcester Emergency Medical Service personnel began treatment before he was taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester.
The Shrewsbury Police Department informed to the press that the driver’s identity was Deven Jared Koenig, 21 years old, who later died of his injuries.
