The Shrewsbury police department recently warned the community about an “increase of coyotes sightings,” just days after a Maltese dog was killed in a Shrewsbury home back-yard.
Many residents have been warned about a pack of coyotes living in the woods that neighbor the Saint John’s football field in the town. The picture above, shared by resident (and Fire Chief) Jim Vuona on July 30th, shows three of 5 coyotes spotted around St. John’s School located at Shrewsbury’s main street.
“f you live in the area of St. John’s or the Foundation Fields on Maple Ave – be aware of the coyotes. Saw 5 on my morning walk today – not really dangerous to people – but keep a leash on your dogs and an eye on your pets,” said Vuona in the post with the picture attached.
In order to protect animals and small children from future coyote attacks, residents must remain alert and exercise caution in the evenings. They can also create barriers such as fences, but they must ensure the barrier is built properly, so coyotes cannot find a way under or over them.
