Selectmen: No public hearing on water rates “until town’s billing system is updated”

Despite previously announcing a public hearing on water rates in the Board of Selectmen meeting that took place last November 28th, The Board issued a notice announcing that said hearing wouldn’t take place, stating that a rate structure change demanded an update of the Town’s billing system, which would require a thorough review of said system.

The water service in Shrewsbury has had its fair share of issues in the recent years regarding the quality of the water and its sources. Earlier this year, an inquest was conducted by Weston & Sampson on behalf of the Town in order to determine the sources of groundwater entering the sanitary sewer, and throughout 2016 there were issues regarding high concentrations of Manganese and dirt in the clean water supply, which forced residents to purchase bottled water for daily use.

At the time it is unknown whether the public hearing will be re-scheduled or suspended indefinitely until the billing system is sorted, but the Town Manager is available to answer questions regarding this matter at his office number: (508)841-8508.
