The Shrewsbury Public Library was awarded recently with $5000 by the Greater Worcester Community Foundation, in order to continue the English Conversation Circle program for adult learners. This makes it the fifth consecutive year in which the Foundation has contributed to the development of this program, originally launched in 2010. The program —expanded since last year to include sessions at St. Anne’s Catholic Church—, has attracted a diverse group of people from China, Japan, India, Nepal, Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela and Russia, among others, who have settled in Shrewsbury and neighboring towns, and it seeks to aid these new immigrants as they adapt to the life in the US, as well as giving them confidence speaking English and improving their social interactions.
So far the program has served over 450 individuals over the past six years, and the Public Library has manifested their gratefulness to the Greater Worcester Community Foundation for the continued support, as well as their group of volunteers. Their schedule is as follows:
- Beginner Level: Thursdays from 5-6 PM, and Saturdays from 10:30-11:30 AM
- Intermediate Level: Tuesdays from 2-3 PM and Wednesdays from 4-5 PM
- General: Fridays at 10 AM at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, Shrewsbury.
Those interested in participating in the program can contact the Library at (508)841-8531.
