This Fall, the Oak and Sherwood Middle School students will be able to participate in the FIRST Lego Program sponsored by Shrewsbury Robotics. This competition, aimed towards middle school aged children, consists of working on small teams and assembling robots using Lego NXT or EV3 bricks, to complete challenges within a 2 and a half minute match. There’s a set of rules for signing up and participating in the competition which can be read in full here; the event will take place on September 12th and will continue until the final competition for each team (17 this year, according to the organization). Those teams who earn a place at the District Championship will continue until that competition at the end of December.
The teams will have meetings every Tuesdays and Thursdays (other days if necessary), from 6:30PM to 8:15PM at the Oak Middle School cafeteria. The cost of the program is $160 and covers competition entry fees, equipment and a team T-shirt, students will be required to pay the middle school’s activity fee directly to their school (paid only once each year), and it should be paid before the meetings begin on September 12th, 2016. The team placements will be assigned by a lottery, detailed in the link above.
According to the organization, the primary purpose of the program is to “encourage students to think about engineering problems and solutions in real world situations, work on engineering challenges using the robots, work together as a team, and hopefully think about STEM related careers”. The sign-up has already started and should be filled using this form.
