Relationships are difficult. Sometimes the person you pick to be with causes so many complications in your life, but you choose to stick with them and get through it because you have chosen that person. Relationships are messy enough on their own, now let’s throw in a long-distance aspect to it. Say your man or woman has to move across the world, but you both choose to stay together in spite of that. Most people will tell you that long-distance relationships won’t work out. It will be too hard, they say. Well, you aren’t about to give up that easy. After all, you’ve found the love of your life! Here are some ways to keep a long-distance relationship alive, despite all the odds.
Number one rule, stay in contact. It is extremely important to maintain an emotional connection as often as you used to. Call them and tell them about your day or simply listen to theirs. A sense of normalcy will always keep you coming back to each other. Try something different. Try video-calling, texting, or just a plain ol phone call. Even taking five minutes out of your day to catch up will mean the world to your significant other.
If possible, visit as often as you can. If you happen to just be a short plane ride away, take that chance any time you get. Try to make each visit meaningful and special because you don’t know when you two could see each other again. Go do something new! Go dancing or explore a winery. Try new things with them to keep the romance alive and going!
Get to know each other. Attempt to understand how they think and what they like. Take mental notes on what they enjoy the most. Knowing your partner inside and out will lead to great relationship improvement. Always remember though that it’s not going to be perfect. You’re both human, you both make mistakes. Don’t idealize your partner, they aren’t superhuman. Learn to love the bad times and the good times because you’re with the person you love either way. Support them, forgive them, love them and grow.
Trust is probably one of the biggest reasons long-distance relationships work out or don’t. It’s hard to be faithful and resist all temptation even in a regular relationship. Always be truthful with your partner and keep them in the loop about what you’re doing that night and who you’re going with. Stay true to them by thinking about them being in the same situation and being true to you. It’s all about trust, people.
Lastly, make each other feel special. Do little things that let them know you’re thinking about them and that you care about them. Send some flowers or write a love note. Let your partner know how much they mean to you and this will keep the relationship growing.
Long-distance relationships are tough, but so are any type of relationships. If you have chosen this person to spend your life with, you have to work for it. No relationship is going to be perfect, but you can always get pretty close!
