The Worcester County Conservation District (WCCD) announced the February 1st of its Plant and Seedling Fundraiser, enabling homeowners, businesses and institutions to purchase trees, shrubs, perennials and edibles for their yard. “The plants and seedlings purchased through the WCCD beautify homes and businesses while providing nectar and food for wildlife”, said Mackenzie May, Seedling Sale Coordinator at (WCCD). “Each year our sale focuses on a particular conservation concern; this year we are working to Conserve the Backyard Harvest to help enable members of the community to grow fruits, vegetables and other edibles in their own yard or community setting. While most individuals would like to grow their own food, many struggle with fertility and pest problems preventing them from having a successful harvest.” According to May, the organization not only provides the plant materials but also workshops, tools and information necessary to reap the benefits of their work and transform a harvest into meals.
The Plant and Seedling Fundraiser will enable the WCCD to provide conservation assistance in cooperation with the USDA-‐NRCS, to landowners on issues related to water quality, pollution, erosion control, forest management and farm resource management, as well as funding the educational sessions and workshops hosted by the WCCD throughout the year, Envirothon grants and Scholarship Program. The fundraiser will provide a vast selection of native plants, preordered February 1st
through April 1st. Pickup of purchases takes place on May 7th at five locations throughout Worcester County.
